Most internet browsers are set to accept cookies by default, but you can usually modify your browser’s settings to decline cookies. Although declining cookies may limit your experience on some websites, it does not prevent you from using the internet.
What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. It enables the website to remember your actions and preferences (such as login, language, font size and other display preferences) over a period of time, so you don’t have to keep re-entering them whenever you come back to the site or browse from one page to another.
How do I clear my cookies?
To clear your cookies on Chrome, click the three dots in the top right corner of the browser > click “More tools” > click “Clear browsing data…” > under “Time range,” select “All time” > check the boxes next to “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files” > click “Clear data.”
To clear your cookies on Firefox, click the three lines in the top right corner of the browser > click “Options” > click “Privacy & Security” on the left-hand side > under “Cookies and site data,” click “Clear Data…” > select “Cookies and site data” and “Cached web content” > click “Clear.”
To clear your cookies on Safari, click the Safari dropdown in the top left corner of the browser > click “Preferences” > click “Privacy” > under “Remove all Website Data,” click “Remove Now.”
Why should I clear my cookies?
Cookies are generally harmless, but there are a few reasons why you might want to clear them:
– To remove any data that a website may have stored about you (similar topic How to opt out of data collection?)
– To free up some space on your device
– To prevent a website from tracking your activity (read also How to disable tracking on my phone?)
– To troubleshoot problems with a website
If you’re concerned about cookies storing personal data, you can set your browser to notify you whenever a website tries to set a cookie. This way, you can decide whether to allow or block the cookie. You can also set your browser to block all cookies by default.
